Real American smoked BBQ is here in Barcelona. We’re talking brisket, philly swiss steak, beef rib, burgers and much more. All ingredients are sourced organically and locally, down to the Olive wood for the smoking. You can literally smell the smoke as you walk towards the lodge cabin style restaurant a block away. Everything from the coleslaw to the sauces are made from scratch. This is not a gimmick. The two brothers who own it have put every effort into making this place a genuine venue for authentic smokey BBQ flavour.  Full review here. Also, they have just opened a second venue in Carrer de Muntaner.

Neighbourhood: Eixample

Must try dish:

Tomahawk or tenderloin with FIRE spicy sauce

Visit Website

Its all about the flavour of the steaks at FIRE, which are cooked on a large grill on view in the open kitchen. Located in the iconic W Hotel, the one on the beach that looks like a giant sail. The Head Chef is a former Hells Kitchen Italy winner, Carlotta Delicato, which adds to the buzz. The show stopper though has to be the more than 2000 gram Tomahawk (about €150). Best shared between two.

12. The Ranch Smokehouse

Neighbourhood: Plaça de Catalunya

Must try dish:

Arepas with pulled pork (starter) / St.Louis ribs

Visit Website

This American BBQ smokehouse may look like a chain restaurant, but it’s in fact a family run affair. Nestled between Plaza Catalunya and Universidad they serve some of the best barbequed meat, steaks and burgers I’ve had anywhere. For example 12hr slow cooked pulled pork or the super succulent, fall off the bone 5hr cooked St.Louis style ribs. Also, some great starters like mac ‘n’ cheese or arepas with pulled pork. This place is incredible value and the quality is so good, I strongly feel they could be charging more for this food. Full review here.

Meloso de ternera (12hr slow cooked veal)

A beautiful masia (country house) that is actually located in Barcelona. Meat is the specialty at this venue that makes you feel as if you could be in one of the many masías dotted around the Catalan countryside, but can in fact be reached by metro. Expect the real Catalan experience and foods, like tomahawk steak, the house specialty of 12 hour slow cooked veal or butifarra sausage. See my full review here.

Must try dish:

Medium-aged European simmental cow

Visit Website

Set across two floors. Lomo Alto is a modern, spacious steakhouse in the centre of Barcelona. Lomo Bajo being the more informal dining area on the ground floor below. They’re big on beef, steaks of all different cuts and sizes, cooked over hot coals. It is expensive, and they have an interesting selection of starters, which I’m not too keen on, but the mains more than make up for that.

15. Pirineu en Boca

Neighbourhood: Eixample

Must try dish:

Parrillada para compatir (Grill to share)

Visit Website

Pirineu en Boca is not only one of the best steak restaurants in Barcelona. It’s also a butchers shop at the front, selling some of the freshest meats from the Pyrenees region in northern Catalonia. At the back of the venue, in the dining area, is where you’ll get to try all those delicious meats. Grilled meats like lamb chops, homemade burgers, Catalan sausage, and of course a selection of the finest cuts of steaks. Or the fall off the bone 4 hour slow cooked shoulder of lamb. This was my second visit to Pirineu en Boca, and I can assure you, if you’re looking for incredible, locally sourced meats in a pleasant environment, this is the spot for you. Also, if the meat looks a little too underdone in my pictures, don’t worry, they cook it to your liking. And, will bring a flat iron grill to your table upon request for further cooking.

Be sure to check out their 1kg chuleton cut with side and 1 litre of beer for €30 on Wednesdays.
