Laid-back Ubud is often referred to as the epicentre of arts, culture and dance in Bali. Surrounded by lush rainforests and rice paddy fields, you’ll also find some of the best local and international restaurants.

A steakhouse that serves Argentinian dishes like empanada provolone and Mediterranean dishes such as croquetas and gazpacho. However, most importantly, steaks cooked over a wood fired oven.  Wagyu from Japan, Angus from Scotland, and other cuts availble on the day are displayed on a blackboard. Your meat arrives at your table, medium rare, on a small wood fired grill so you can cook it to your liking. As well as impressive sides and desserts, there’s also an extensive drinks menu with many international brands and wines.

Address: Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Must try dish: Beef rendang or duck spring rolls

Visit Website

Although temporarily closed due to the pandemic, Three Monkeys is one of my all time favourite restaurants in Ubud. I first visited back in 2006 and have been back many times since. Situated half way up the Monkey Forest Road, with water features and a view of the rice fields during the day. The low lighting makes the ambience at night even better. Indonesian and western food is served at very reasonable prices. Let’s just hope they open up again soon.

Swept Away at The Samaya Ubud Hotel (about a 10 minute taxi ride from Ubud) is one of the most romantic restaurants in Bali. Overlooking the Ayung river, tables are decorated with candles and flowers. A choice of a la carte or a fabulous tasting menu. Service and food is of the highest quality. Arrive at 6pm to take advantage of dining at sunset.

Must try dish: Nasi Goreng and Oreo milkshake

A cosy restaurant on the first floor overlooking the Monkey Forest Road. A good atmosphere, and a nice selection of food. I recommened the Nasi Goreng (fried rice, fried egg and pork skewers). Also on the menu are some scrummy milkshakes (including Oreo flavour) and cheap drinks. My tip is to grab a raised table and stool street side and watch the world go by.

8. Bebek Tebasari Resto

Address: Jl. Raya Kengetan, Lodtunduh, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia 80571

Must try dish: Bebek tebasari (crispy duck)

Visit Website

Crispy duck is a famous Balinese dish, and this is one of the best places to get it. Choose one of the cabanas over the water and enjoy views of the rice fields. There are some western dishes, as is the case with most restaurants in Bali, but they also have a really good selection of local dishes. About 5km from Ubud, the restaurant will arrange a free shuttle service. Just mention it when making your booking or get your hotel to call them.

9. Bridges

Bridges is a casual fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar serving dishes inspired from across Asia and the West. Currently closed due to the pandemic, I really hope they open up again soon, as the food and service have always been first class. On top of that, the views are incredible and make you feel as though you are deep in the rain forest.

10. Atman Kafe

Must try dish:

Skin juice health juice (cucumber, lime, celery, spinach & mint)

A cafe serving meat, vegetarian and vegan dishes in an aesthetic setting. The area at the front is used to sell souvenirs. Always busy (pre-pandemic), but still a very relaxed place to chill out. The real reason I come to Atman Kafe though is the health shakes, smoothies and teas. Just what you need after a night of too many Bintang beers.
