The Best Fried Calamari Sandwiches in Madrid

The fried squid sandwich, or bocadillo de calamares as they are called in Spanish, is one of the most famous food items in Madrid, and a must try dish when visiting the city. Large amounts of freshly fried squid pieces stuffed into a baguette or bread roll. Topped with either lemon juice or mayonnaise.  Although personally I like to use both at the same time.

Below is my list of the 3 best fried calamari sandwiches in Madrid. Note they are all located around the famous Plaza Mayor.

1. La Campana

La Campana is one of the most well known places in the city to try the famous calamari sandwich. Located on one of the narrow streets leading off from Plaza Mayor, you’ll often see a large queue of people, waiting for their bocadillo de calamares, snaking out the door. There is also tapas available and sit down dining, but the majority of customers get their sandwich to go.

Another popular bar to grab a fried calamari sandwich is Bar Postas. Located on one of the side roads between Puerto del Sol and Plaza Mayor. They have lots of other fried options including pescado frito, small fish fried in batter, but it’s the fried squid rings in a baguette that’s the main attraction.

Founded in in 1940, Casa Rua is located bewteen San Miguel Market and Plaza Mayor. As well as good value calamari sandwiches, they also serve some tapas options and beer.
